According to the Liverpool Daily Post, the city council wants to do more to market Liverpool as a world-class destination.
The newspaper cited a council report which said that council officials believe the city's brand could be stronger and more positive.
As a result, about £150,000 is to be spent on devising a new way of marketing Liverpool to prospective holidaymakers and visitors.
"Liverpool Branding project will seek to provide a powerful and positive Liverpool brand that is both desirable to investors and visitors," the council stated.
The report added that officials will look to develop a theme with which Liverpool can be associated, similar to how Paris is associated with romance and Milan is linked with style.
Liverpool has recently attracted international attention as a result of its status as this year's European Capital of Culture.
This has included high-profile events such as a stadium concert by Paul McCartney, who described the city as "the centre of the universe".
