Redevelopers focus on historic area

10/09/2008

Carlisle's historic quarter has become the focal point for officials in charge of the city's redevelopment.

The plans include Tesco working with the University of Cumbria in a relocation plan by the river.

Art and culture around this area, especially Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery , are expected to be the springboard for investment, redevelopers said.

After this visionaries would look at attracting businesses to the M6 corridor then strengthening retail, offices and ancillary sites in Carlisle centre.

Carlisle Renaissance has to be particularly sensitive around the historical quarter because of its site of special interest and the fact one of the proposed locations for development was previously used as a gas works.

Bryan Gray , chairman of the Carlisle Renaissance Board, said: "We have brought focus and direction to this aspiration and I believe we are building the wider consensus and the support that is needed to make it happen."

Redevelopment body Carlisle Renaissance is a partnership between Carlisle city council, Cumbria county council and the Northwest Regional Development Agency.

Carlisle will soon benefit from more train services, under new plans by Network Rail.
