A record number of people have visited or plan to visit Liverpool's Gustav Klimt: Painting, Design and Modern Life in Vienna 1900 exhibition.

More than 134,300 people have seen the exhibition so far and another 17,000 still have tickets to see the paintings. For the sake of comparison, last year's Turner Prize exhibition attracted 71,804 people.

The Klimt exhibition could be the last time that the paintings are seen in the UK, reports the Liverpool Daily Post.

Tate director Christoph Grunenberg told the newspaper that the "incredible popularity" of the exhibition has been a major boost for Tate Liverpool and the city.

"While we expected the exhibition to be popular, attendance has far exceeded expectations," he added.

Liverpool is also benefiting from the city's status as European Capital of Culture 2008, which is expected to attract an additional two million people this year.
