Salford a rising star in tourism sector

06/08/2008

Salford is continuing to establish itself as a tourism destination according to a new survey commissioned by Visit Manchester and the Northwest Development Agency.

The Greater Manchester Visitors survey found that Ordsall Hall and Salford Museum and Art Gallery were two of the three most popular attractions for overseas visitors.

While the city of Manchester has the highest proportion of repeat visits, a higher proportion of new visitors go to Salford, Wigan and Trafford.

Councillor Barry Warner, Salford council's lead member for culture and sport, said the city has much to offer UK and overseas visitors.

"We've been working hard to make our hidden gems such as the museum and art gallery and Ordsall Hall must-see destinations and it appears to be paying off."

Salford Quays is widely held to be one of Greater Manchester's most interesting places, thanks to the Imperial War Museum North, the Lowry Centre, a wide range of water sports and retail outlet, as well as bars and restaurants.
