Merseyside's economy received a major boost from a pair of special events at the weekend, it has been claimed.

Liverpool hosted the start of The Tall Ships Races 2008, with thousands of visitors heading into the city centre to see the vessels moored at both Albert Dock and Wellington Dock, together with an opening ceremony attended by Princess Anne.

Meanwhile, Southport also experienced an influx of tourists as Royal Birkdale staged golf's most prestigious tournament, The Open Championship.

Organisers of the events estimated that each one generated £30 million worth of additional trade for the area's hospitality industry and retailers, reports the Liverpool Daily Post.

Warren Bradley, leader of Liverpool city council, told the newspaper the weekend would prove to be one of the most important of the year for the region.

"It is great for economic stability and great for business in the city. Although I want people to enjoy themselves, I want to make sure businesses feel the uplift they deserve," said Mr Bradley.

Liverpool's economy is also benefiting from the city's status as European Capital of Culture 2008, which is expected to result in an additional two million people visiting the area this year.
