Government pledges £65m for Daresbury Campus

16/07/2008

Daresbury Science and Technology Campus in Cheshire has secured major government investment worth £65 million, the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills has announced.

The money will finance a cutting-edge computer modelling centre and a research facility to develop detector systems for use in biomedical imaging and security systems.

Ministers say they are committed to developing Daresbury as a focal point for collaboration between researchers and industry.

Since April, more than £85 million of investment has been earmarked for the northwest science sector.

Steven Broomhead, chief executive of the Northwest Regional Development Agency, said that following news that the future of Jodrell Bank is now secure, the latest announcement "concludes an amazing three months for the northwest and our science and innovation sector".

Last week, the Science and Technology Facilities Council agreed to commit funding for a key research project at the Jodrell Bank observatory for the next three years.
