Blackpool Task Force delivers recommendations

14/07/2008

A new study reveals that the urban regeneration of Blackpool is underway although there is more to be done to deliver "real change for the people".

The report by Liz Meek, regional director of the Government Office for the North West, found that progress is being made on last year's recommendations by the Blackpool Task Force.

Tourism, housing, economic development and transport are being targeted. Moreover, the creation of a business district is on track via the £220 million Talbot Gateway project.

Other key initiatives include £35 million of government investment, partners working to broaden Blackpool's appeal and the development of higher education facilities.

There will also be the replacement of some of the famous sea front with mixed hotel, residential and commercial developments.

Bryan Gray, chair of the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA), said the report demonstrates that real action is being taken.

"Whilst good progress has been made so far, it is clear that we need to continue to prioritise Blackpool's social and economic regeneration."

In May, construction group Balfour Beatty agreed to buy a 95 per cent stake in Blackpool International Airport in a £14 million deal.
