Revamp plans for Cumbria's Maryport Harbour

20/06/2008

Maryport Harbour in Cumbria's Lake District could be rejuvenated and turned into a major tourist destination if funding becomes available.

As well a visitor attraction, the harbour could also be home to residential and office developments, according to Maryport Developments, which runs the marina.

The company says at least £1 million is needed to transform the harbour and it is possible that the Northwest Regional Development Agency will be asked for funding, reports the BBC.

County council spokesman Tony Markley told the broadcaster that councillors have supported the idea of reviving the harbour for over 20 years.

"If it gets the go ahead, this new potential scheme would take the harbour to the next level," he said.

"We won't see firm plans until the beginning of 2009, but it's important that people in Maryport ... know we're fighting their corner and are sowing the seeds of a new revamp for the area."

Maryport Harbour is situated by the Solway Firth, which is an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
