01/05/2008
Around 375,000 copies of the pocket-sized Best of Lakeland Attractions guide will be distributed to tourism offices in Cumbria, Lancashire, the northeast, Yorkshire and London, as well as hotels and B&Bs.
In addition, 55,000 foreign language version of the guide have been produced for visitors from Japan, China, Spain, Germany and France.
Peter Mearns, executive director of marketing at the Northwest Regional Development Agency, said Cumbria has a "strong tourism product".
"The Lake District is a flagship destination within the northwest," he remarked.
"This excellent pocket-guide will help to raise the profile of the region both nationally and internationally."
Until this year, the South Lakeland District Council has been responsible for producing the guide.
One place to visit is the Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery, which was named the 2007 Large Visitor Attraction of the year at England's Northwest Tourism Awards.
The 17th-century townhouse holds collections of national importance including paintings from the Pre-Raphaelite period.
