Blears advocates genetic disease research

26/03/2008

The human fertilisation and embryology bill will enable scientists to conduct pioneering research into genetic diseases, according to local government secretary and Salford MP Hazel Blears.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Westminster Hour, Ms Blears urged MPs to remain focused on the central issues of the controversial debate.

"This legislation really is about trying to make sure we can get the research that could find us the key to long-term diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's," she remarked.

She was speaking after the government announced that a Biomedical Research Centre is to be created in Manchester, ensuring that the city becomes a leading player in genetics and stem cell treatment.

Ms Blears said she sympathised with the strength of feeling on both sides of the embryology and genetics debate.

"There are two very strong arguments here. One is making sure that Britain is the place where you can do world leading research on some really important long-term issues; secondly, some people feel really strongly about it on a conscience basis."

Health secretary Alan Johnson said Manchester's Biomedical Research Centre will put the UK at the forefront of vital health research.
