RBS contribution to Manchester revealed

25/03/2008

Figures showing the Royal Bank of Scotland's (RBS) contribution to the Manchester economy have been revealed in a business publication.

According to Crain's Manchester Business magazine, RBS contributes around £213 million to the Greater Manchester economy through salary payments.

RBS, which employs 400 people at its human resources centre in Manchester Spinningfields, provides work for around 10,000 staff in the city-region.

It also has a retail banking group at Liverpool's Number 1 Dale Street and a corporate team at The Plaza, also in Liverpool.

Last month, RBS reported a nine per cent rise in underlying profit to £10.28 billion in 2007, up from £9.41 billion in 2006.

Fred Goodwin, group chief executive, said: "Whilst the future seems as difficult as ever to predict, it is clear that we enter 2008 with real momentum behind our organic growth, and with our product range, distribution capabilities and customer franchises materially enhanced."

RBS has predicted that its recent takeover of ABM Amro will boost its earnings by nine per cent by 2010, up from the figure of seven per cent forecast at the time of the offer.
