According to the North-West Evening Mail, the Ulverston Partnership wants to restore Ulverston Canal to its former glory and then start to use it for events that would attract more tourists to the region.
The Ulverston Partnership is now looking into ways that funding for the possible project could be generated.
Ulverston Partnership chairman, councillor Colin Hodgson, said: "The canal is kept in a reasonable condition. But it's a facility that maybe could be put to better use … there's potential to turn it into a leisure facility."
He added that regattas could boost the canal's social appeal and bring money in to Cumbria's tourist industry.
According to Ulverston Online, the canal was closed in the 1940s, but is still a wildlife haven and a popular place to walk.
It was built in 1796 and is the deepest, widest canal in England.
